PosturE Correction

POSTURE CORRECTION

Good posture and an attitude let you get away with anything.” – Lorna Landvik

“A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind.”

– Morihei Ueshiba

What is Posture?

Posture is the position in which minimum stress is applied to each joint. If the upright posture is correct then minimal muscle activity is needed to maintain the position – David J Magee

If a straight line is drawn vertically from the mid-ear to the ankle, it should dissect the body into two equal proportions.

HOW ARE YOU AFFECTED?

  • Multiple aches and Pain in muscles, tissue, joints, and spine.
  • Deviation in normal spine curvature
  • Chronic muscle strain
  • Low on energy and reduced capacity to work efficiently
  • Generalized fatigue
  • Lung volumes and cardiac capacity reduced
  • Nerve impingement and neuropathies.
  • Reduced flexibility, Stiffness in joints.
  • Risk of heart disease
  • Poor Sleep
  • Indigestion and heartburn
  • Mechanical back pain leading to prolapsed inter-vertebral slip disc.
  • Muscle Imbalance
  • Trigger points and fibrous band formation in tissues

What is Postural dysfunction or “Poor” posture?

When our spine is positioned in unnatural positions, in which the “S” shape of the spinal curvature is not maintained, that results in the joints, muscles and vertebral spine being in stressful positions resulting in various disorders.

from a prolonged forward position as we repetitively use cell phones, laptops, video games, and even backpacks that contribute to this unhealthy posture.

WHY IS IT NEEDED?

Sometimes people ask, Why should I change my posture? I don’t mind it.’ But one of the big things that happen with forwarding posture is that your center of gravity goes forward. This increases the risk of falling,”

Dr. Kirti Marya {Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon} and her team of five physiotherapists recently conducted a study to find out its potential causes for back pain and neck pain. The study revealed that 287 out of 317 children across grade two to 10 in a Dubai school suffered from different levels of tightness in the hamstring muscles. These aches are triggered by poor posture, which causes overall body aches, notably back pain. – Khaleej Times

Correct Posture is essential for maintaining a balance of the body, proper arrangement of supporting structures, and effective functioning of the body. Therefore it is correct to say that it is a prerequisite of a healthy life is not an exaggeration – Moon JH

What are the common types of poor postures?

Standing-Posture

HOW ARE YOU AFFECTED? HOW ARE YOU AFFECTED?

1. Sway Back Posture is a commonly attained relaxed standing posture, pushing the hips ahead and leaning backward. This lengthens the abdominal muscles, shortens the extensor muscles of the back, and causes excessive pressure on the intervertebral disc leading to low back pain and adjacent joint stiffness.

2. Kyphosis or Round back is a common condition that results in forward rounding of your upper back region. Compared to natural curves which have a curvature around 20-50 degrees, kyphosis has an excess curve greater than 50 degrees. This causes your spine to hunch over and make you appear to be slouching or have a hunchback.

3. Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the spine, a disorder in which your vertebra curves to the side. There are different types of scoliosis including congenital, neuromuscular, degenerative, and idiopathic. If you suffer from scoliosis, you usually have one shoulder or hip higher than the other. In addition, your head might not be in the middle of your body and you may have lower back pain, numbness, and fatigue

4. Lordosis is the exaggerated curvature in the lumbar or cervical spine. For example, hip and back pain may develop early when standing in a lordotic posture, which is where the lower back is held in a deeply arched position and the pelvis is relatively tilted further forward than a typical average position leading to a muscle imbalance of the core muscles.

5. Forward Head Posture {FHP} or Text neck is a common condition where your head and ears are positioned ahead of the body’s vertical midline. In normal or neutral head posture, your ears line up with your shoulders and midline. FHP puts excessive stress on the cervical intervertebral discs which can lead to bulging discs and neuropathy (traveling nerve pain/sensation into the arms and hands). Since everything is connected, the shoulder joints and the rest of the spine also suffers

Poor posture can not only make you look bad but can also have adverse effects on your overall health. Maintaining a poor posture for long periods of time affects the natural alignment of the body and lowers energy levels. In addition to soreness and pain in the body, poor posture can also lead to physical and mental stress – Gulf News
